Local Roots & The Areas We Cover

Our founder, Alex, was born and bred in Elsenham, a small village outside of Bishop's Stortford next to Stansted Airport. Having grown up here, he knows firsthand that Elsenham and its surrounding villages have long suffered from a lack of dedicated, quality agency support.
While Elsenham is home base, Alex brings an extensive career history working right across Great Dunmow, Bishop's Stortford, Harlow, Hertford, and everywhere in between. Our core focus is serving these towns and local villages where we know the market inside out and can provide the absolute best service. However, while our roots are firmly planted here, our commitment to our clients knows no borders. We will always go wherever our long term clients need us.
Driven by 15 Years of Proven Expertise
Black Sheep Residential brings together the unique expertise of local estate agency veteran Alex Chapman and his partner, university lecturer Dr. Bobbie Smith.
By combining Alex’s extensive industry insight with Dr. Smith’s structured, analytical background, they have created a refreshing, no nonsense, bespoke service tailored entirely around the needs of both sales and lettings clients.
Across different markets, business models, and even continents, Alex built a reputation for trust, innovation, and unwavering client loyalty. Clients haven't just bought, sold, or rented out property through him, they’ve followed him regardless of the company name on the door.
Alex started his career as an apprentice at a large regional corporate agency, quickly rising through the ranks to Manager. Seeking to break the traditional mold, he partnered with a local developer to help launch the UK’s very first coffee shop agency, an unconventional concept that set the stage for a career defined by innovation:
Pioneering Tech: He was part of the team that introduced Virtual Reality viewings back in 2016, years before the rest of the industry adopted it, and facilitated the sale of one of the first UK properties using Bitcoin.
Corporate Discipline Meets Independent Service: By transitioning into the independent agency world, Alex mastered the true value of personalized customer service. Taking the structure of corporate agencies and blending it with the agility and care of independents, he created a balanced, best of both worlds approach.
Adaptability & Growth: During the pandemic, he launched an online sales agency specifically to help independent letting agencies offer a dedicated investor to investor sales arm to their clients.
A Global Perspective: Alex spent two years in Australia, studying for the Queensland estate agency license to gain a completely fresh perspective on the industry. During this time, he managed properties across Australia & New Zealand for an international short term (Airbnb) rental management company, while also serving as Head of Marketing & Promotions for an energy drink brand, negotiating large scale corporate deals with retail giants like BP.
